Dark Skies

Moray Speyside region is located east of Inverness in the Highlands around the River Spey, Moray Firth to the north and the Cairngorms National Park to the south. National Geographic Traveller Magazine once rated Moray Firth Coast amongst some of the most breathtaking coasts in the world. Come and see why!

With the driest and warmest weather in Scotland, the region is an ideal place to be visited all year around not only for the whisky distilleries based in Moray Speyside but for its wildlife, food, drinks, beaches, perfect dark skies for stargazing, outdoor activities, historic buildings, castles, walking, fishing and golfing. River Spey and River Findhorn are famous for salmon fishing. Findhorn Village is the home of Findhorn Foundation, worldwide well known for its community philosophy. Gin and craft beers are very popular in the region among visitors and a visit to the farm is also very rewarding – trying local products and taking a photo with/of a Highland Cow cannot be missed. The combination of rural settings and coastal scenery is a perfect invitation to spend at least three days in Moray Speyside.

It is possible to see the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis here in Moray Speyside. Yes, it is! North of Scotland has the same latitude as Stavanger in Norway and Moscow in Russia, therefore, it is possible to watch the Aurora Borealis from places like Cullen, Portnockie and Burghead.

Speyside is the home of the largest number of distilleries in Scotland – with 51 distilleries working! Over 50% of the total amount of distilleries in Scotland are located in Moray Speyside and so often is called “Malt Whisky Country”. This perfect weather contributes to the growing of barley which when combined with the water of the River Spey, produce the “Water of Life” usually lighter and sweeter than other Scotch single malts.  The Malt Whisky Trail is a must for any whisky lover who visits the region – the trail covers seven worldwide famous distilleries, one historic distillery and the Speyside Cooperage, where the casks are produced.

There is so much to do and see in the Moray Speyside area!
